Some Thoughts on Transformers...

As I mentioned on my Ratchet buildup, I've been a fan of the Transformers since before the cartoon ever aired. I've bought the toys, watched the cartoons, read the comics, novels, and fanfiction. My favorite character is probably G1 Prowl, though Wheeljack and Shockwave are real close. I still smile every time I think about Sludge's tech spec quote.

Despite my long history with the characters, I've never felt cheated or slighted when a character got changed. When Megatron became a tank in G2, I considered it an upgrade. Prowl as an F1 car? Not so much, but not the end of the world, either. Optimus Prime as a fire truck? Sure, sounds good. As long as I can have fun with the characters, I'll keep collecting toys and building models of them.

In fact, I've always considered change a necessary part of the mythos. On a base level, Transformers is a war story. When one side or the other stagnates in any war, they fail. Knights discovered this when firearms came into common use. Regimented soldiers discovered this when guerrilla warfare came into being. War is one environment where evolution can not be debated. Historically, some of mankind's greatest scientific achievements came during times of war (whether they should have been used or not is a seperate issue). There's a reason why American forces were using P-51 Mustangs at the end of WWII instead of sticking with P-40 Warhawks. The same holds true for the Transformers: a walkman doesn't really fit in today's world. Soundwave as a character can still exist with his original personality despite what he turns into.

So I say to the creative team behind next year's Transformers movie: go for it. I'm not going to boycott it if Bumblebee is a Camaro instead of a Beetle or a New Beetle. It's not going to have any effect on my enjoyment of the existing character, his G1 toy, the upcoming Classics toy, or how he behaved in he cartoon or comics. Heck, I'll probably enjoy the new design as much if not more. I have faith that I will like this movie: I believe that everyone involved knows what makes the series great, and can stick to the root of the characters despite the cosmetic differences. I believe it will be a movie with good characters, a story I can enjoy, and mind-bending special effects.

Oh, and Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime. That's just awesome.

Guest Gallery Update

Several great new models have been added to the gallery, thanks to two different Matts. Be sure to check them out starting here!

For Better or For Worse

New Diecast Directory Online

Earlier this week, I was sent a link to www.eModelli.com, a still-growing diecast model car directory. It's a pretty cool site: thorough, easy to navigate, and constantly expanding.

Mattel to produce '66 Batmobile Replica?

The following was posted at the 1966 Batmobile boards:

"The big rumor from [Mattel] is that they have the license to produce the original Batmobile from the TV series! I don't have to tell you how big this car will be. Of course we will have it! I will update you as more info becomes available. (I hope they don't send a sniper team to get me now that I told you this top secret info)."

Mattel certainly has more financial pull than model manufacturers, an established history of producing Batmobiles, and a broader market than specialty diecast companies like the Danbury Mint. However, DM got as far as taking preorders before the plug was pulled on their replica: let's not count this as a real possibility until official word as come from Mattel (or safer yet, not until the cars have started showing up in stores).

I don't want a Plymouth, Peg; I want my Dodge, dagnabbit!

It never fails, that line amuses me every time. Yes, I'm one of those people who was entertained by Married...With Children. Mostly because of Ed O'Neill: I've enjoyed pretty much every role he's played (both on TV and in movies).

How does this relate to models? After years of tracking down parts and information, the Dodge is finally done.

First Teaser for Transformers Movie Now Online

If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch it on the official Transformers movie site.

I can't even guess how many times I've watched it so far. More than the Spider-Man 3 trailer, that's about as close as I can get.

Cars is a Great Movie

Though Cars came out on the 9th, and I've had Lightning McQueen done a week before that, it wasn't until this weekend that we actually got a chance to visit the theater. In short: great movie, I'm just sorry it took two weeks to get to see it.

I think Cars carries the Pixar tradition quite well. It was fun, beautifully rendered, full of automotive history and cool little references (Doc Hudson as The Hudson Hornet is my personal favorite), and just a nice story overall. It's gotten some mixed reviews, but it seems like those people are either:

A) Comparing it to previous Pixar movies, or
B) Having trouble getting past the main characters being automobiles

Is it as amazing as The Incredibles? No, probably not. Then again, it's not a sequel to The Incredibles, either. It's still an excellent movie, though. As for not relating to the mechanical stars of the movie? If you're a fan of any motorsport, appreciate automotive design in general, or just enjoy driving nowhere in particular, you should have no problem.

So my recommendation: see it, buy the DVD when it comes out, and be sure to check out the soundtrack for some really cool driving songs in the meantime.

New item added to the "Stuff for Sale" page

I recently picked up the '86 Pace Car from Greenlight Collectibles from Amazon.com. It turns out that I got one of their red variants, though - perfect for the diecast collector looking for variants (or an owner of one of the 1:1 red Corvettes), but I wanted a yellow one for my own collection. A few days later I found one of Monogram's Pace Car kits, so I don't need the diecast version any more and thought someone else might like it. If you're interested, you can pick it up here or e-mail me for details.

Back to Transformers

It's been a while since I finished my last Transformer-based model, and I have quite a few "unbuilts" piling up. With the new movie coming, I thought it would be nice to get back into things starting with Cliffjumper.

Amazing Dioramas/Art

A link to this site was posted on the Scale Auto forums. If you're not familiar with the work of Alan Wolfson, you really need to view his gallery: these dioramas truly are works of art.

Lightning McQueen

I'm part of the camp that's solidly looking forward to the release of Cars this Friday. It looks like it should be a fun time, and Pixar's track record is certainly a plus.

I did some touch-up work on the Lightning McQueen diecast this weekend, and I'm very happy with the results. He was one of those cases where everything to make the model look nice was already there, it just needed a little detail work to make it pop.

Support the Military Toy Replica Act

Even if you personally don't build military models, I urge all model builders to support House Bill 4806, the Military Toy Replica Act. In short, US Defense contractors & agents want to start charging licensing fees for models of current and past military equipment, and a Bill currently under consideration will keep these machines part of the public domain.

For full details, plus information about what you can do to add your support, visit Revell's web site.

Tip of the Month Back on Schedule

After being a bit late with the updates for April and May, the Tip of the Month feature is back on track with a first-of-the-month update.
