Tip for July 2011:
5-Minute Shock Absorbers
Here's a quick way to replace or upgrade your kit-supplied shocks. Start with a section of 0.080" rod stock (1) cut to the same length as the kit-supplied shock tube and taper both ends to dull cones. Then cut two short sections of 0.060" rod (2) for the upper and lower mounts. Next, make a couple of spacers out of 0.010" plastic stock or a strip of tape (3). Finally, cut a length of stirring straw (available at grocers, restaurants, and most places that sell coffee) about half the length of the shock tube (4). Assemble the parts as shown, paint, and you're good to go! Use larger rod stock/straws to create heavy duty shocks.
