Background

Debuting in the same commercial as Hank Hot Rod, Della features many of the same styling cues and features, plus some extra: living up to her "Deluxe" moniker, she sports opening doors and a removable convertible top - a first for the Chevron Cars series.

Packaging

Della Deluxe's base is a continuation of Hank's, approximately 7½" (190mm) x 4½" (115mm) with a gravel lot printed on the "road" and a teal edge. The Chevron logo/name and "Keep your Neighborhood Clean ♻" is printed on both ends, and her name and the Chevron Cars logo are on the front edge. Where Hank had an image of the concession stand, though, Della's backdrop faces the other direction so we can see the drive-in entrance sign and screen, currently playing the Intermission clip from the commercial. "Safety tested and recommended for children age 3 and over" is printed in the bottom right corner of the panel. The back panel has Della parked in front of "Ray's Roller Rama[sic]." The toy's features are listed on the wall directly behind Della, and a small Chevron billboard with "Happiness comes from within" is behind the building. The bottom of the package has a photo of Della with callouts for her moving eyes, opening hood, removable top, sideview mirrors, opening doors, and two-tone paint, plus the usual marketing paragraph: "Life is grand for Della Deluxe. She's used to getting deluxe treatment wherever she goes. Della loves being a deluxe car because no matter where she goes, the soda shop, the boulevard or the drive-in movie, every ride is first class." The Owner's Manual and order form are packed inside the blister.

Casting/Paint

Della is cast is baby blue ABS with a bright white upper, all finished in a high gloss. Her bumpers, mirrors, hood and trunk ornaments, windshield frame, and door handles are done in bright silver. Of her six taillights, the top two are painted orange and the bottom four are red. Her mouth is the usual gloss black with white teeth, and her eyes are blue with peach eyelids. Most of the edges are razor-sharp, with only a bit of ghosting around the bases of some of the taillights. The windshield is clear plastic with black wipers. The usual "Techron" sticker license plate is centered on the rear bumper, and reflective silver stickers serve as the glass in both mirrors.

The interior is cast in light gray with a black steering wheel and gray paint-matched sun visors at the top of the windshield. It's a good generic "classic American" design with a large raised gauge cluster, detailed radio face and glove box door, vertical pleated bench seats with a "V" pattern on each, and four sets of seatbelts. Under the hood, the silver engine top completely fills the bay. It's the usual simple relief casting, but the valve covers, radiator, and four-carb intake are all present and recognizable. The chassis has the suggestion of frame and drivetrain detail, plus a dual exhaust system and the usual name and series logo plate. The tires are black vinyl zig-zag treads with hard plastic wheels forming the silver finned hubcaps and white sidewalls.

Features/Accessories

Della has an opening hood, opening doors, snap-in removable top, and moving eyes. The eyes are activated by pushing down on his front and rolling him forward to make his eyes move left and right.

Accuracy

As with most Cars, Della is a pretty good match to her screen appearance. The only real differences are the dagmars on her front bumper and her interior is now gray instead of red. The former is easily explained by her entire bumper being used for the singing sequence, though the interior is a bit of a head scratcher. It looks nice and fits the overall look, though, so no great loss. She measures approximately 6" (155mm) long, 3" (80mm) wide, and 2¼" (60mm) tall.

Overall

Chevron really tried to make Della a "deluxe" with the glossy two-tone paint, extensive trim, and abundance of features. There are even subtle touches like the painted sun visors that could have been skipped but add to the overall "extraness" of the car.
