Background

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth, Lt. James Gordon—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

Packaging

This is released as part of Hot Wheels' "1/50" Batman vehicle series (more about that later), on a blister card that measures approximately 5" (13cm) x 6¼" (16.5cm). The front of the card simply has the Hot Wheels logo, DC bullet, "8+," and The Batman movie logo above an angle-topped plastic blister. A subtle gradient goes from black at the top to blue around the edges of the blister to white behind the bike. The back has co-sells for other vehicles in the line and most of the legal jargon. Inside the blister is a small folded paper with "Batcycle" and the Mattel logo against a similar dark gradient, and the rest of the legal info and barcode underneath. The cycle is held in a plastic tray folded to fit snugly inside the main blister. It's a good looking piece for MIB collectors, and opens easily enough even though there's no way to do so without destroying the package.

Casting/Paint

The vehicles in this assortment are considered part of Hot Wheels' "Premium" series, and it's reflected in the quality of the replica. Most of the bike is made of metal, with plastic used for a few details including the cowl, handlebars/fork, and exhaust pipes. These parts are so perfectly integrated that it can be difficult to tell where the breaks are. There's some excellent detailing to further enhance the look, with cross-drilled brake rotors, in-scale chain links on the drive, and the correct fastener heads around the sides of the engine. The tires look like vinyl at first glance, but are actually part of the hard plastic wheels. The difference comes purely from a subtle shift between the blacks used on each.

Paint is used well across the board: gloss black for the frame, tanks, and most of the engine, flat black for the seat, gold for the drive chain, and silver for the brakes, fuel cap, and several engine details. Color breaks are generally excellent, with only a trace of ghosting between some silver and black.

Features/Accessories

The only feature is a posable front wheel, which is attached to the handlebars so you get a correct look to the bike when the wheel is turned. There is no kickstand or base, which would have been nice, because right now the bike leans way over onto one of the exhaust manifolds unless otherwise supported. I stuck a 1x1 LEGO plate under the far side of the bike for these photos, which gets it up to a decent "parked" position.

Accuracy

The shape of the bike is just about perfect, from the custom cowl to the long trailing arms. There are a few details that were skipped, like the rear coilover, but those may have been omitted due to casting limitations - better to have a missing part than a bad looking one. The colors don't quite match up to the movie bike, but are close and could easily be fixed if you're so inclined. Officially the scale is listed as "1/50," but that would make the bike nearly 16 feet (4.75m) long. In reality it's about half that, making this a good companion piece for Jada's 1/24 Batmobile.

Overall

Excellent work all around, well deserving of Mattel's "Premium" label and price.
