1/64 Eleanor On the Way

It's not exaclty the 1/24 or 1/25 version that I was hoping would be released, but it looks like collectors will finally be able to pick up an accurate Eleanor from the Nick Cage version of Gone in 60 Seconds in 1/64. You can check out the prototype photos here.

Sunstreaker - The Missing Link

In continuing the "Transformers" theme, I wanted to post the results of some online research I've done. Everyone familiar with the 1984 Transformer cars knows that they were all based on real cars with one exception: Sunstreaker. His front half is clearly based on a Lamborghini Countach, but no Countach ever had that giant rear engine or squared-off rear end.

Some people consider the Lamborghini Restyling Prototype (above) to be the inspiration for Sunstreaker, but there's one problem: this car wasn't created until the mid-1980s, years after the Sunstreaker mold first hit the market.

Looking at the timeline found at Fred's Workshop, we see that the first proto-transformer was something called the "Cosmo-Countach," a half robot/half sports car that could be converted into a full sports car. The "Cosmo" cars were a series of changable vehicles created by Takara to cash in on the "super car" craze of the 1970s (the trend could be seen in everything from Hot Wheels cars to real car accessories like wings and zoomie pipes). As it turns out, the Cosmo-Countach bears a striking resemblence to a certain Lamborghini brother:

One can see how the idea used for the Cosmo-Countach could evolve into Sunstreaker: the head and arms are essentially in the same place, so all that's left would be to engineer the front of the car into a set of legs. That idea could then spawn an entire series of car-to-robot figures, with greater care taken to make them look like their real-world counterparts (the information at Fred's Workshop backs up this thought as well: the Countach LP500S Super Tuning is listed as the first release of the Diaclone line). It looks like, in an idea similar to the Penny Racer car modes of Bumblebee and Cliffjumper, Takara based the design for one toy on the design of an older toy.

Alternators Mirage is Now Out

The robot mode is OK, but this Ford GT is out of the park. I would recommend picking up Mirage to anyone who likes the GT, even if you're not a TF fan, he looks that cool...quite possibly my favorite Alternator so far.

Some Thoughts on Transformers...

As I mentioned on my Ratchet buildup, I've been a fan of the Transformers since before the cartoon ever aired. I've bought the toys, watched the cartoons, read the comics, novels, and fanfiction. My favorite character is probably G1 Prowl, though Wheeljack and Shockwave are real close. I still smile every time I think about Sludge's tech spec quote.

Despite my long history with the characters, I've never felt cheated or slighted when a character got changed. When Megatron became a tank in G2, I considered it an upgrade. Prowl as an F1 car? Not so much, but not the end of the world, either. Optimus Prime as a fire truck? Sure, sounds good. As long as I can have fun with the characters, I'll keep collecting toys and building models of them.

In fact, I've always considered change a necessary part of the mythos. On a base level, Transformers is a war story. When one side or the other stagnates in any war, they fail. Knights discovered this when firearms came into common use. Regimented soldiers discovered this when guerrilla warfare came into being. War is one environment where evolution can not be debated. Historically, some of mankind's greatest scientific achievements came during times of war (whether they should have been used or not is a seperate issue). There's a reason why American forces were using P-51 Mustangs at the end of WWII instead of sticking with P-40 Warhawks. The same holds true for the Transformers: a walkman doesn't really fit in today's world. Soundwave as a character can still exist with his original personality despite what he turns into.

So I say to the creative team behind next year's Transformers movie: go for it. I'm not going to boycott it if Bumblebee is a Camaro instead of a Beetle or a New Beetle. It's not going to have any effect on my enjoyment of the existing character, his G1 toy, the upcoming Classics toy, or how he behaved in he cartoon or comics. Heck, I'll probably enjoy the new design as much if not more. I have faith that I will like this movie: I believe that everyone involved knows what makes the series great, and can stick to the root of the characters despite the cosmetic differences. I believe it will be a movie with good characters, a story I can enjoy, and mind-bending special effects.

Oh, and Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime. That's just awesome.

Guest Gallery Update

Several great new models have been added to the gallery, thanks to two different Matts. Be sure to check them out starting here!

For Better or For Worse

New Diecast Directory Online

Earlier this week, I was sent a link to www.eModelli.com, a still-growing diecast model car directory. It's a pretty cool site: thorough, easy to navigate, and constantly expanding.

Mattel to produce '66 Batmobile Replica?

The following was posted at the 1966 Batmobile boards:

"The big rumor from [Mattel] is that they have the license to produce the original Batmobile from the TV series! I don't have to tell you how big this car will be. Of course we will have it! I will update you as more info becomes available. (I hope they don't send a sniper team to get me now that I told you this top secret info)."

Mattel certainly has more financial pull than model manufacturers, an established history of producing Batmobiles, and a broader market than specialty diecast companies like the Danbury Mint. However, DM got as far as taking preorders before the plug was pulled on their replica: let's not count this as a real possibility until official word as come from Mattel (or safer yet, not until the cars have started showing up in stores).

I don't want a Plymouth, Peg; I want my Dodge, dagnabbit!

It never fails, that line amuses me every time. Yes, I'm one of those people who was entertained by Married...With Children. Mostly because of Ed O'Neill: I've enjoyed pretty much every role he's played (both on TV and in movies).

How does this relate to models? After years of tracking down parts and information, the Dodge is finally done.

First Teaser for Transformers Movie Now Online

If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch it on the official Transformers movie site.

I can't even guess how many times I've watched it so far. More than the Spider-Man 3 trailer, that's about as close as I can get.
