Like Zeke, this was a full scratchbuild bringing a 2D robot into the 3D world. The subject this time was the UR2EZ from Draw 50 Monsters, Creeps, Superheroes, Demons, Dragons, Nerds, Dirts, Ghouls, Giants, Vampires, Zombies, and other Curiosa... (yes, that's the full title, and no, I'm not typing it more than once). Lee J. Ames' Draw 50... books were a mainstay for me when I was younger, I still use the lessons learned all those years ago when building models today. No official size was given for the UR2EZ, so I was on my own and decided to go with something in the Robby the Robot size class.

I started with a section of magic marker, which had the correct tapered cylinder shape needed for the body. I sliced out the sections for the head and torso, sanded them smooth, and drilled out the mounting points for the arms and chest bolts. I then capped the head and torso with sheet styrene, and sanded the edges smooth. The upper arms were made from sections of styrene rod stock, with styrene and aluminum tubing making up the lower arms. The hands were cut from small rod stock and 0.020" sheet stock. The legs are made from two different sizes of tubing, with decorative pearls forming the feet. These were glued together at angles to make it look like the robot was in mid-stride, as it was drawn. Lastly, the face was made from more styrene stock with small red jewels for eyes and guitar wire for the sensor array.

Once all of the components were finished, I sprayed it with Rustoleum Gray Primer followed immediately by Duplicolor Chrome. This provided a rough metallic finish, giving it a heavy, "cast metal" look that worked perfectly with the vintage monster movie design.
