Thunder, Thunder, Thunderhawk - Ho!
Sunday, January 31. 2010
Thunderhawk may be the most 1980s vehicle ever. It takes the third-generation Camaro, adds a set of DeLorean doors and digital grid/lightning bolt graphics, and transformers into a jet car piloted by a member of GI-Joe (no, seriously). My secondhand T-Hawk was a little worse for wear, but all it needed was a little restoration to go from grody to gnarly.

Lightning McQueen Pinewood Derby Template
Sunday, January 24. 2010
Disney has created a template for Pinewood Derby builders that allow them to recreate Lightning McQueen. It conforms to all current BSA rules and regulations, and a set of movie-accurate graphics are also available. Both the template and the graphics are available here.
UPDATE February 2011: Looks like Disney pulled the plug on this. I will leave the link above in case they decide to bring it back, but for now the template and instructions are no longer available.

The ship was a model - as big as this!

Although I generally avoid non-1/24 models, there are a few exceptions. I discovered another one of those exceptions last night at HobbyTown, when I saw this on the shelf:
If you don't recognize it and are a sci-fi fan, you need to go see Galaxy Quest right now. The kit itself looks pretty good, and should make for a fun buildup.

Book of Eli Review
Wednesday, January 20. 2010
I had a teacher back in school who was an entertainment snob. He abhorred pop culture, felt that artists had to suffer for their craft, and refused to watch "movies" - he watched "films." To him, the distinction was that a "film" was a serious piece, whereas a mere "movie" was without intellect and as such unworthy of his time.
Although I never bought into this (which should be obvioustoanyonewholooksaroundthissite), I bring it up because, despite being a post-apocalyptic sci-fi piece, The Book of Eli falls firmly under the "film" heading. (Spoilers after the jump)

Operation Condor
Sunday, January 17. 2010
When Hot Wheels released their Battle Force 5 vehicles in mid-2009, it reminded me of the original M.A.S.K. series back in the mid-1980s. I started looking into restoring them, and although Condor isn't the first one I started working on, but the relatively small amount of work needed to bring it back made it the first one completed. You can see the finished results here, and this is what it looked like "before":
Gunter Glieben Glauchen Globen
Tuesday, January 12. 2010
My first finished project of 2010 was built as a complete goof. I had picked up a couple of spare MotorMax Pintos when they went on sale, and decided this one would make a good base for the lowrider mentioned in The Offspring's Pretty Fly (for a White Guy). I'll be settling into a few more "serious" projects soon enough, but this was a lot of fun to throw together. You can view the finished car here.
New Tip of the Month
Sunday, January 10. 2010
These last couple of post-holiday weeks have kept me away from the bench and the site, but it's time to get back to work. First up is the new Tip of the Month.
