The Detective's Ride

Much like the movie Dick Tracy tried to ride the popularity created by Batman, AMT was likely hoping to repeat the success of their Batmobile kit by repopping their '36 Ford Coupe in Tracy-themed packaging. in both cases, it didn't work out so well. Despite starring Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Dick Van Dyke, James Caan, William Forsythe, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Sorvino, and Madonna, you'd be hard-pressed to find many people who actually saw the movie. The only thing more difficult is finding modelers who have built this kit as Tracy's car. This is probably due to three problems. First, production was a lot more limited on these than it was for other movie tie-ins. Second, the few that are on the market are often purchased by racing enthusiasts, as the '36 Ford was a popular choice for stock cars. And third, the kit is really not that good, so I'm sure several of them ended up getting thrown away in frustration. I was able to get mine finished, if only because I was doing it as a synchronized build.

It's a typical "villain with a heart of gold" tale where you can see the ending from a mile away. Instead, Despicable Me is one of those movies where the real beauty is the journey.
