Moebius Models Previews

Dave Metzner of Moebius Models has posted some photos of the hand tooling that will be used to make the production tooling for their Hudson Hornet kit:

You can see more photos of the mock-up here. Also be sure to check out his albums featuring the International Lonestar and 1955 Chrysler 300.

All three look outstanding, and will definitely be finding places on my shelves when they become available. The Hornet is tentatively scheduled for release by the end of this year, with the other two around the same time or early next year.

Inception Review

Despite rumors to the contrary, Inception is not a terribly confusing movie. It is, however, a terribly intricate movie, and requires the audience to pay attention more than usual. But if you're willing to put in the time, you will be rewarded with some of the best performances in one of the smartest movies to hit theaters in quite a while. (WARNING: MILD SPOILERS)

The Sorcerer's Apprentice Review

The Sorcerer's Apprentice was a perfect example of how the telling of a story can be more important than the story itself. On paper, the story seems like a laundry list of clichés: we have the reluctant hero who's gifts make him an outcast (Jay Baruchel as Dave Stutler), the wise mentor who lost everything (Nicolas Cage as Balthazar Blake), the dastardly villain who threatens the world with an allegiance to a more powerful evil (Alfred Molina as Maxim Horvath), we have the beautiful heroine who sees the potential within the hero (Teresa Palmer as Becky Barnes), and so on. It really doesn't get much more by-the-numbers than that. But Apprentice manages to exceed all expectations, based almost solely on the strength of the characters.

Model Update

I had to take out my Bandit Firebird to use as a reference, and as long as it was out I took some new photos of it.

Nothing Can Stop...The Animal!

Like many kids, I happily welcomed the monster truck craze of the 1980s. Like any cultural phenomenon, those early days saw some of the greatest - and most insane - innovations. Bigfoot received regular tire upgrades until it was finally sporting eight ten-foot oil field rig tires. Aces High set a long-distance wheelie record. Virginia Beach Beast was riding around on a former tank chassis. The tie-in toys followed suit, with different manufacturers trying to outdo each other: Flex had tires that would change diameter when they encountered obstacles, C.L.A.W. had multiple speeds and articulated body for steering, and Monster Masher had no fewer than 18 powered wheels along its length. One of the more famous "gimmick" trucks was The Animal, with tires that featured pop-out claws. I had one of these in my group of monster truck toys, but didn't know that Monogram had made a deal with Galoob to make a model of it until several years later. Now, thanks to the power of the internet, I have a 1/24 version as well!

You Can Build This, Or You Can Build That

This was a fun (if ridiculous) project: the "That" box from the Kia Soul "Hamstar" commercial. If you're not familiar with it, watch below:

Jonah Hex Review

Jonah Hex is like that kid from "Pretty Fly" - it tries so hard to be cool that the result is just embarrassing. The source comic is a solid mix of wild west adventure and badass antihero, but they still felt the need to add extra plot twists, wild coincidence, and bizarre weapons of mass destruction. At least Wild Wild West recognized that it was ridiculous...Jonah Hex feels like the producers thought they were making the next Lonesome Dove (note: it's not a good sign when a movie compares unfavorably to Wild Wild West).

The Car from UNCLE

My first encounter with The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was actually not the TV series, but the Transformers character Megatron, who's alt mode was the modified Walther P-38 used in the series. Still, the Piranha was a very cool car, and I was fortunate to get to build one. If you're a fan of the show, be sure to check out my July 2010 wallpaper.
