Your flame-throwing, supercharged, apocalypse-ready '72 Buick Skylark

From Jalopnik:

In typical New York fashion, the Dodge Charger from "Fast Five" got the high-attention spot on the main floor of the New York Auto Show to flaunt its matte-black paint and automatic transmission. The more impressive movie car has to park its flamethrowers in the basement.

The Medusa was built by filmmaker-engineer Evan Glodell for his move "Bellflower," an independent film that will be released in August. Described as a post-apocalyptic love story, the movie's centerpiece is the junkyard transformation of a 1972 Buick Skylark into a fire-breathing stormer.

Vince Grashaw, one of the film's producers and actors, has been promoting the movie by driving Medusa to colleges around the country. Starting from a $2,600 Skylark bought off Craigslist, the producers added their car mods as they shot their independent movie, crossbreeding two of the most money-thirsty hobbies known to man.

The Skylark's major modifications are the rear flamethrowers, with a 30,000-volt ignition system. The 350 V8 has been bolstered with a supercharger, and "Fast Five"-quality smoke comes from a bleach-spraying system on its rear wheels. There's also spy cameras built into the front and rear, a hydraulic rear suspension, roll cage and sawed-off shotgun in the trunk.

The rear seats also fold down, in case it needs to haul any extra cases of whoopass.

Bellflower hits theaters August 5; you can see some hot action here.

Prime Time

With time short these last few weeks, I've been tackling projects that I can do in the minutes between "real life" events. One of those was my first venture into the G2 universe: G2 Optimus Prime.

R's First Ride

I originally had plans to build the BMW from The World is Not Enough using Revell's kit, but as my collection of unbuilt kits grew and my interest in the movie declined (they definitely hit a peak with Tomorrow Never Dies) I decided to switch gears and use Maisto's diecast to represent the 19th entry in the Bond franchise instead.

Press Release: Meet MEDUSA at the New York International Auto Show this Weekend!

(New York, NY, April 19, 2011) - Visionary filmmaker Evan Glodell will be celebrating his upcoming Summer movie release of Oscilloscope Laboratories' BELLFLOWER this weekend by unveiling his hand-crafted, road ready and apocalypse- equipped car - Medusa - at the New York International Auto Show. This unforgettable machine creates some of the film's most high-octane moments amidst the romance cum revenge-fantasy tale of love, betrayal and vengeance.

Medusa will be located in booth 1532 ("The Batmobile Booth") on Level 1 of the Exhibition floor

NY International Auto Show is located at Jacob Javits Center in NYC

Medusa is also available for demonstrations and press ride-alongs throughout NYC on April 25th, 26th and 27th

Glodell, a former engineering student, constructed Medusa to be a real-life road monster. Unlike the Batmobile, Glodell's Medusa is the real deal - no CGI or special camera tricks needed...the extraordinary features you see in the film are the same features you will see when you meet Medusa in person!

Medusa is equipped with two fuel injected exhaust flamethrowers with a 30,000 volt ignition system, smoke screen, a bleach drift-kit, adjustable rear suspension, 3 surveillance cameras (all in which are controlled from the dashboard), a customized apocalypse exhaust system, 6-71 Supercharger, posi rear end, a self-contained oxygen supply for chemical or underwater warfare, a roll cage, stow-able fold-down back seat and occasionally holds a sawed-off shotgun in the trunk in case of emergency.

BELLFLOWER was a critic and audience favorite at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival for its visceral energy and gorgeous imagery all of which come together in a story of love and explicit mayhem on the outskirts of L.A.

"Evan Glodell is the writer, director, star and editor of "Bellflower," this crazy movie about these kids who live in Oxnard, California, who build their own flame throwers and are obsessed with the apocalypse," says Karina Longworth (NPR and LA Weekly) "And it's a romance but the romance and the apocalypse elements are completely fused together, and it's really violent and bloody. And it's wonderful."

BELLFLOWER will be released by Oscilloscope Laboratories on August 5th, 2011

SYNOPSIS
Best friends Woodrow (Writer/Director Evan Glodell) and Aiden (Tyler Dawson) spend all of their free time building MAD MAX-inspired flamethrowers and cars in preparation for a global apocalypse. But when Woodrow meets a charismatic young woman and falls hard in love, he and Aiden quickly integrate into a new group of friends, setting off on a journey of love and hate, betrayal, infidelity, and extreme violence more devastating and fiery than any of their apocalyptic fantasies.

BELLFLOWER premiered at the 2011 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL, drawing particular accolades for its visceral imagery and daring storyline. A much celebrated debut, Glodell wrote, stars in, and directed the film. He also incorporated his engineering background and unique talents into the production - fashioning custom optics for the camera, hand-crafting a fully-functional flame-thrower and transforming Medusa from the guts of a 1972 Buick Skylark to the fire-breathing road warrior featured in the film.

Major Change of Pace

Although I generally avoid figure models, I made an exception here for a couple of reasons: first, I really like Ghost in the Shell and got the Tachikoma to represent the series in my 1/24 collection. Second, since the Major is technically mechanical in nature (rather than a full human), she still thematically fits perfectly with others in my collection (there is still some debate as to whether The Stig is organic or not).

A-Maize-ingly Bad

A not unfair question was posed to me when I received the box containing this diecast in the mail: why? As in, why would I devote any amount of time, no matter how short to create a tribute to something that qualified as the worst movie of all time in the book Showgirls, Teen Wolves, and Astro Zombies?

It's no secret I enjoy bad movies. Sure, there are a few unappreciated classics, but for the most part I enjoy them out of simple curiosity. I'll hear people say things like Transformers or Batman & Robin are the worst movies of all time, without ever having seen a truly awful movie. So I was prompted to see just what was out there.

So is The Maize the Worst Movie of All Time? Eh, it depends...although its production quality was far above Axe 'Em, and it was nowhere near as stupid as Cyborg, I do have to admit that by most yardsticks this may indeed be the worst movie out there. Which goes back to the original question of why. Well, that one has a simple answer: Because this is my flag planted atop Mount Crap. I have gazed unblinking into the face of terrible and lived.
