Vampire Van

I normally pass on models that were "inspired by" TV shows & movies, preferring to stick with those that had actually appeared on-screen. But I really liked the look of the Vampire Van, and decided to make an exception this time. Because I had no 1:1 reference, I was able to change things up whenever I wanted. This was a good thing, considering how much work was needed. It's not an altogether bad kit, but it is definitely showing its age.

Toy Fair 2013 Spotlight: GoldieBlox

One of the main reasons why I maintain this site is to encourage people to build. Model cars are my personal preference, but I believe that creating tangible things of any kind is one of the great overlooked aspects of our current world. People create spreadsheets, presentations, texts, e-mails, and such...but at the end of the day, you can't pick up, hold, or feel the physical presence on any of those things. Girls are at an even greater disadvantage, as typically "feminine" pastimes and careers often downplay ideas like construction and maintenance in favor of concepts like fashion and celebrity. So when someone comes along to help encourage girls to do more "real world" hobbies, they get my attention.

Debbie Sterling has my attention.

A Stanford-trained mechanical engineer, Sterling was unhappy to see that women made up such a small percentage of her field - just around 11%, according to the National Science Foundation. So she approached the problem the same way she would any other engineering challenge: get to the root of the issue, and solve it there. After a year researching play habits, she developed a toy that introduced girls to the world of engineering while appealing to their strengths in reading and communication. That toy was GoldieBlox, a book and mechanics combination that lets readers follow along with the story and build machines along with the character.

GoldieBlox and the Spinning Machine

I was able to see GoldieBlox firsthand at Toy Fair, and talk briefly with Sterling about it. Unlike other girl-themed building toys, which are usually little more than recolors of existing boys' toys with a licensed property added, this was built from the ground up to appeal to girls. When asked about the "girly" components used on GoldieBlox, Sterling's answer was both smart and honest: they're appealing. She's not out to redefine gender roles, or force girls to give up girly things...she just wants to expand their options, and introduce them to a world they may not have otherwise known about.

The success of its Kickstarter campaign, along with the overwhelmingly positive reaction from parents and kids (the entire first shipment of 18,000 sold out during pre-sales), have shown that others share her desire. Sterling looks to expand GoldieBlox to include more stories, more characters, and more elaborate engineering challenges.

Toy Fair 2013 Day 3: Model Citizens

The last few years, Toy Fair has had almost no representation from the model kit world...but that changed big time for TF2013. The biggest news was the first built sample of the 1/25 Tumbler kit from Moebius. Fans have been waiting and hoping to see a kit of this car since 2005, and when Frank Winspur announced his intention to do one the response was enthusiastic to say the least. There were also on-hand samples of the Batpod, Batman & Catwoman figures, Mel's Drive-In and 1313 Mockingbird Lane in 1/87 scale, and several monster kits.

Round 2 and Revell were also on the scene with several of their latest kits, including Christine and the Boot Hill Express. More of these classic TV, movie, and show rod kits have been coming out recently, and 2013 is shaping up to be another good one.
M2 Machines

Elsewhere, manufacturers Bburago, Maisto, Carrera, M2, and Greenlight had several new items: Maisto & Bburago are continuing their tradition of exotic supercars with the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento and Dodge Viper SRT, while Carrera has a new GT-40 and 917K on deck. M2 Machines had some new classic iron, but more exciting is their first foray into model kits. They will be starting with a version of their Camaro, but if all goes well we will see more in the future.
Greenlight Collectibles

Greenlight entered the world of 1/24 scale entertainment in 2012, and had samples of their Bewitched, MIB3, and Fast Five cars at the show (reviews for all three are available here). While they were not able to confirm any new licenses for 2013, they did hint that we will be seeing some new modern muscle from Chevrolet soon.

All in all, it was fantastic to see so many companies with 1/24 & 1/25 scale items—2013 looks like it's going to be a great year for builders and collectors!

Toy Fair 2013 Day 2: LEGO Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite Review

I had the opportunity to see the premiere of LEGO Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite at the Paley Center for Media tonight, followed by a panel with Jon Burton (director/producer), Jeremy Pardon (Director of Photography), Clancy Brown (Lex Luthor), Troy Baker (Batman), and Travis Willingham (Superman), moderated by Gary Miereanu (Publicist, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment). As a fan of the LEGO Batman video games, I was interested to see how that universe translated to a full movie. The result turned out to be better than expected, thanks to solid writing, good animation, and an excellent voice cast.

Toy Fair 2013 Day 1: Transformers

Hasbro had some big news this year—literally—with the new Titan Class Metroplex, a figure that surpasses even the legendary Fortress Maximus:

And while the Weaponizers line seems to have gone the way of Human Alliance and other "large scale" figures, their Rescue Bots series had some interesting figures, including an Optimus Prime towing a very Ultra Magnus-inspired trailer:

There were also previews of upcoming Beast Hunters, Kre-O, Bot Shots, and Generations figures. Be sure to check out Seibertron.com for full coverage of Hasbro's display!
