Cars 2 Review
Sunday, June 26. 2011
Cars 2 is a very different movie from the original. While Cars was all about slowing down and taking it easy, Cars 2 is all action and adventure. So while the result is a weaker story, it is by no means "mindless entertainment," and still makes for a great couple of hours and a fine addition to the Pixar library.
he basic idea is simple enough: McQueen is challenged to an international racing series, and Mater gets inadvertantly caught up with a group of spies. The real fun, though, is for car buffs. From Finn's James Bond-inspired gadgetry to the reliability of certain cars, there is a lot to love here. My personal favorite moment was a quick reference to A Car's Life, a low-budget ripoff of the original Cars ("Headlights, monsieur!").
Car culture aside, the strongest feature here is the visuals. Pixar continues to blur the line between animation and realism, and several of the scenes in Cars 2 were indistinguishable from actual race footage. Truly outstanding work here, and the animation team is to be commended for their work.
All in all, Cars 2 was a great piece, and while not as strong as its predecessor it still makes for an excellent movie and is well worth your time.
Collector/Modeler Interest:
No shortage here - the Cars marketing juggernaut has something for pretty much every level collector.
