Big Gallery Update!

While working on the redesign, I acquired a bit of a backlog for the Guest Gallery. But the most recent submissions are now online: check out hte work of , Bob, DREDDBATFAN, Jason, and Rustbucket!

Camaro KITT Car

Given how little work went into this, I won't add it to the front page. Still, I was pretty happy with how it turned out and wanted to add it to the site (especially for anyone who wanted to see the new Knight Rider rolling for the General instead of the Blue Oval). You can see my version of KITT as a new Camaro here.

New Look

At the beginning of the year, I decided it was time to update the look of the site. Not a complete overhaul, but the previous design hadn't been changed in a few years and so it was time to freshen things up a bit. So for the last couple of months I've been working on and troubleshooting the new design. There are still a few minor things that still need to be cleaned up, and a couple of pages that need to be updated, but overall it should be all done. If you come across a page that doesn't look right for whatever reason, send me an e-mail and I'll try to get it fixed right away.

For Sale...

I'm continuing the process of reducing my collection to 1/24~1/25 scale models only, and have just put up a 1/18 Ertl Mach 5 diecast and a 1/32 ARII Toyota Celsior model kit on eBay.

Go Speed Racer!

Mattel's Speed Racer movie toys have hit the shelves, and I picked up their Mach 5 (part of the Hot Wheels R/C line):

There were a couple of different versions that looked close to 1/24~1/25, but neither the boxes nor the shelves were marked. So I brought in my Polar Lights Mach V as a comparison and got the one that looked closer. As you can see, the overall size is a nearly perfect match to the PL kit:

I'm really looking forward to this movie. Not because I am a huge Speed Racer fan, or because of anyone particular in the cast (though both John Goodman and Susan Sarandon are excellent). No, I'm willing to spend $10 for the chance to watch F-Zero GX on the big screen:

The only more visually awesome thing I can think of would be seeing the IMAX release of the movie. The only problem with that would be our collective heads exploding at the sensory overload. Still, it'd almost be worth it...

Press Release: Auto World Licenses Tooling for AMT, MPC & Polar Lights Model Kits, American Muscle/ Ertl Collectibles Die-Cast

South Bend, IN – Auto World (a division of Round 2, LLC) has signed a licensing agreement with RC2/Learning Curve Brands, Inc. of Oak Brook, Illinois. The contract will allow Auto World to produce and market plastic model kits under the well-known brands of AMT, MPC and Polar Lights. Also included are the rights to manufacture 1:18 and 1:24 scale die-cast replicas using the trademarks of American Muscle and Ertl Collectibles. In addition, Auto World will now be handling production of Custom and Premium promotional die-cast vehicles for RC2’s current C&P customer base, with sales continuing through established representatives.

Thomas E. Lowe, President and Owner of Round 2, is now assembling a team of knowledgeable plastic model and die-cast specialists who are excited about this license opportunity and passionate about reintroducing these brands to their respective communities. Lowe states, “Our goal is to bring back many sought after vintage kits of all types from the AMT and MPC tooling banks, some that haven’t been available for decades. We've recruited model kit expert and creative designer John Greczula from Retro Hobby, Inc. to work with us. The American Muscle tooling bank has great potential, too, and Craig Flickinger, who was the Product Manager for American Muscle for several years, is on board to ensure that collectors are kept as priority one. Using our own production facilities, we will have the capability to adjust quantities of the model and die cast lines to satisfy market demand. We will not rely solely on old tooling, but will develop new tools as well.”

Further, Lowe states, “2008 is going to be a roller coaster ride for us as we prepare our game plan and get things moving. There is an incredible amount of information to be absorbed and organization that must take place. We understand the modeling and die-cast markets have changed and that several large mass-retail chains are beginning to turn their backs on stocking these products. We will try and slow that down by introducing new and innovative products, hopefully enticing them to support our brands. I learned a lot when I ran my previous company, Playing Mantis, and I intend to use all of my knowledge and contacts to the maximum. For me, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime.”

Tom Lowe and RC2 Brands, Inc. are no strangers to each other. Lowe, an entrepreneur known for his expertise in collectible automotive subject matter, sold his first company, Playing Mantis, Inc. to RC2 in 2004. Lowe founded Playing Mantis in 1994 and resurrected the classic Johnny Lightning brand, producing small-scale die-cast replicas and electric slot cars catering to the adult collector. Enthusiastic response resulted in phenomenal growth of the brand, and spurred Lowe to venture into other areas, including Polar Lights plastic model kits and Memory Lane seasonal product.

Round 2 was established by Lowe in 2005 and reintroduced electric slot cars under the Auto World brand, an iconic hobby catalog trademark which Lowe purchased from Auto World’s founder, Oscar Koveleski.

Round 2 is an innovative collectibles company located in South Bend, Indiana. Its family of brands includes Auto World, currently featuring X-Traction, ThunderJet and Super III 1:64 scale electric slot racers and racing sets; Forever Fun Holiday Collectibles, featuring detailed recreations of favorite holiday characters and EarthGlow Candles, featuring unique licensed candles and candle toppers. Round 2 is proud to add AMT, MPC and Polar Lights model kits, American Muscle and Ertl Collectibles die-cast to its portfolio of brands.

I don't wish to be forward but we'd like to exchange cars with you...

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot is another one of those overlooked movies that I really enjoy. Though it's not quite as obscure as some other films on my list, I'm still surprised that the movie isn't better known (the cast alone - Clint Eastwood, Jeff Bridges, George Kennedy, and Geoffrey Lewis - should've made this a bigger hit). It's not that it was a bad movie, either: Bridges was nominated for an Oscar (he lost to Robert De Niro for The Godfather Part II), and it has had a consistently "fresh" rating at RottenTomatoes.com (currently standing at 86%, the same rating as Doctor Zhivago). Word has it that Eastwood refused to work with United Artists after he felt they dropped the ball promoting the film...all things considered, I can believe that.

Regardless, I wanted a representation of the movie for my collection, and set out one day looking for a '73 Firebird from the first action sequence. To my pleasant surprise, Superior/Sunnyside made a '73 T/A that was a near-perfect match. All it needed was a little cleanup and some repainting. The end result can bee seen here.

National Make '‘n Take Day this Saturday

A reminder to everyone looking forward to it and a notice for anyone looking to do something fun with the kids: Saturday, March 8, will be Revel's first national Make 'n Take Day. If you're unfamiliar with Make 'n Takes, here's the rundown from Revell's press release:

"...This means young modelers (or those interested in starting modeling) across the country will have an opportunity to visit their local hobby shop to build a special edition SnapTite Camaro Concept car. The car is only available at these Make 'n Take events and is designed for easy assembly by the novice. The SnapTite Camaro does not require glue and can be assembled in about 20 minutes by seven to eleven year olds.

"With 50,000 SnapTite Camaro'Â’s already distributed to hobby shops across the country, Revell expects the first ever Make 'n Take Day to be a huge success. "Parents continue to tell us they love the interactivity and fun Revell products provide while getting their children away from video games," said Mike Brezette, Revell marketing vice president. 'National Make 'n Take Day is our response to this feedback and our way to help children and adults of all ages rediscover the fun of building a precision-engineered model.'

"Revell, along with their distributors, is providing the special edition SnapTite Camaro Concept car at cost to hobby shops interested in participating in Make 'n Take Day. Hobby shops also receive a promotional banner and mini product catalogs. 'Revell, our distributors, and our dealers make no profit on this event,' said Brezette. 'We all believe it'Â’s very important to provide the kits at the lowest possible cost to give as many children as possible the opportunity to enjoy the model building experience.'

"Revell has offered Make 'n Take packages for many years which are often used by Boy Scout troops, schools and summer camps. 'By using a simple SnapTite kit that is easy to assemble, kids get interested in the hobby without being overwhelmed with a more complicated model that requires paint and glue,' said Brezette."

So check your local hobby store (not sure where the nearest store is? check here), and think about joining in. It will be a great opportunity to spend time with the kids, plus it will offer both you and your kids the chance to try out the hobby.
