Another Way to Die

With Quantum of Solace just over a month off, the theme song (performed by Jack White & Alicia Keys) has been made available online. You can listen to it here.

Thoughts on Knight Rider

I have to admit, things started off a little rocky for me...the excessive jump cuts, "cool" shots, and somewhat forced dialogue/situations didn't grab me at first. Fortunately, the story and actors seemed to find their groove earlier than they do in many other shows (the made-for-TV movie probably helped), and by the second commercial break everything was flowing much better. By the end of the episode I was hooked, and I look forward to seeing next week's installment.

It's too early to say if we're entering another age of cool TV cars, but between this and Supernatural (I'm even willing to count the short-lived Drive), we're seeing some really great "car stars" lately.

Reminder: Knight Rider Series Premier Tonight

The series premier of Knight Rider is tonight at 8/7c on NBC. If you haven't seen the previews for it yet, well...let's say it look like it heavily borrows certain sequences from Transformers. Could be interesting, I know I'll be watching.

Press Release: Something new from Kalmbach Books

FAB-1/24

While visiting RockinRoller's scale model album a bit ago, I saw he had added a 1/24 R/C FAB-1 to the Plastic & Resin gallery. This was great news to me, as most of Gerry Anderson's work was only produced in 1/64.

Long story short, the R/C car as a UK-only item, but through the magic of eBay I was able to get one delivered today. It's pretty nice overall, and with a little work (and a lot of Bare Metal Foil), it looks like it can be built into a nice replica of Lady Penelope's ride.

Bullitt Mustang Options

Franklin Mint just announced their Fall 2008 lineup, and one of the cars listed was Steve McQueen's '68 Mustang from Bullitt:

For a second I wondered why it was news - this car has been out for months. Then I realized I was thinking of the Danbury Mint. So that makes four companies who have produced the Bullitt Mustang in 1/24~1/25: Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, Revell, and Ertl.

And yet still no one makes a 1/24~1/25 Tumbler...

A Scene from Ghostbusters

The bridge scene from Ghostbusters was always one of my favorite parts of the movie. It not only set up the final act perfectly, but it provided a serious edge that made the rest of the movie that much better. Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson played the movie's sole dramatic scene perfectly, and the music just further enhanced it. By the way, the song playing at the end of the scene was "Judgement Day" by Elmer Bernstein, available only on the Varese film score (track #25).

Ghostbusters was on VH1 night before last, and even edited for television it remains one of the best movies ever created. When they got to the bridge, I was reminded not only of how much I liked the scene, but also of the way the New York City skyline looked as dawn broke. I felt it was fitting to remember the way that skyline looked.

Silly String War

OK, so this is sort of old news at this point, but I just found out about it and I thought I'd pass it along to others who may not have heard about it yet:

"...cans of Silly String were collected by a KB Toys store in the Crossgates Mall and will be used in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Soldiers spray it into rooms to detect hidden trip wires attached to bombs, said Eric Durr, spokesman for the New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs.

The mother of a soldier visited the toy store in Guilderland and asked store manager Mike Phelan if the company would be interested in donating Silly String for the war effort.

Phelan said a sign was put up on the counter and within a month, 900 cans of Super String -- a new name from the manufacturer of the Silly String brand -- were donated by store customers.

A felt-tipped marker was kept at the counter of the toy store, and many customers inscribed messages on the cans, such as 'Stay Safe,''Come Home Soon,' and 'Sorry it's not a beer.'

The cans provided a colorful contrast inside the single-story building in Wilton that serves as a warehouse of goods to be shipped to soldiers overseas."

Press Release: Revell Supports Military Troops with Model Kits

Elk Grove Village, IL -– Revell, the industry-leading supplier of model kits, today announced plans to distribute more free model kits to U.S. military members overseas and to injured members recovering here at home, as it has done since the start of the Iraqi War. Revell has donated nearly 1,000 free model kits since 2003, valued at tens of thousands of dollars, to military members.

This year’s model kit donations include some of the most popular cars, ships and planes ranging in easy to difficult skill level. Many troops stationed overseas and members undergoing medical treatment for injuries sustained during mobilization in support of the war are enjoying Revell'’s model kits. "“Revell'’s model kits have helped our injured soldiers with very limited physical capabilities pass the time," said Crystal Cole, Sergeant First Class of the Warrior Transition Unit in Fort Dix, New Jersey.

"“Revell'’s donations are in honor of the men and women who sacrifice so much,"” said Mike Brezette, Revell marketing vice president. "“We'’re building on more than 60 years of support for U.S. military members and we'’re glad to continue that tradition."” While Revell continues to respond to direct requests for military donations, the company also supports the military with donations made via the International Plastic Modeler'’s Association Hobbies for Heroes program.

Revell captured the interest of hobbyists and military collectors in the 1960'Â’s with WW II planes and military ships that traced naval history. Today, Revell continues to release historic/war aircraft including the Vietnam Gunship, the Apache Helicopter and the Navy'Â’s SBD Dauntless.
