1963 LeMans Tempest sells for $226,521

From AutoBlog:

The eBay auction for this 1963 Pontiac LeMans Tempest started out innocently enough. Obtained after owner died. Appears to have original interior but no motor, no transmission. Body has a little rust and some dents. There's stuff in the trunk, but no key to open it. Opening bid nine days ago was a mere $500. After one week, eBay seller 123ecklin will pocket $226,521 before auction fees. What happened between Day 1 and Day 9 is an amazing story.

The car's plexiglass windows, unusual suspension setup and a dash plate bearing the name of a racetrack tipped the owner to its racing history. But what he didn't know is that the car is one of only six 1963 Pontiac LeMans Tempest Super Duty coupes ever made...

I'm LEGO Batman

This was supposed to be an easy one. A LEGO set that I already have, modified slightly to match the one shown in LEGO Batman? No problem. And to start out with it was as easy as it should have been: adding the fender guns took about 2 minutes. The wheels, however, were another story altogether.

The wheels used in the video game are the same ones that were shown on the box art for "Two Face's Escape," but they aren't what came in my kit. Fortunately, BrickLink.com is around to solve problems like this, and I placed an order for a set of correct finned wheels. Weeks later, and it becomes obvious that my parts were lost in the mail. OK, new order to a different vendor. These ones were received, but they were the same type as what I already had. Luckily the third time was indeed the charm, and a mere month and a half after I started down this path I was able to add the LEGO Batmobile to my collection (and yes, it is about 1/24 scale to fit in with the other cars in my collection).

SEMA 2008 Coverage

From MSN Autos:

"In an atmosphere where trick, one-off fabrication is commonplace and the latest hot cars litter the Las Vegas Convention Center to the point of relegating them to yawn-producing fixtures, standing out can be a challenge. The struggle to rise above the masses can drive some to extreme, bizarre, uncanny and creepy creations. Scouring the 26 miles of aisles at the SEMA Show uncovered the following singularly peculiar automotive creations, which run the gamut from creative, nostalgic and misguided to full-on overkill."

New Tip of the Month

Like many other modelers, some of my earliest efforts were woodworking projects. I recently found out that Lowes has "Build and Grow" clinics a couple of times every month. These clinics allow kids and their parents a chance to assemble a simple wooden kit with no cost and with nothing required except your time. These are a great way to introduce kids into the world of project building, and helps them learn how to follow instructions and correctly use tools. You can check out the upcoming Build & Grow projects at lowesbuildandgrow.com, or visit your nearby Lowe's store to find out more.

Thanks, Fuji!

I always like to give credit where it is due, and this time I think the folks at Fuji deserve a shout out. A few weeks ago, the CCD failed on my otherwise trusty FinePix E550. Apparently this wasn't an uncommon problem for this vintage camera, but it wasn't something I could really complain about. Until then, it had worked flawlessly for three years taking thousands of pictures and movies.

I can't really go without a camera for too long, but at the same time I didn't want to just rush out and buy a new one if this one was fixable. So I followed the instructions on Fuji's web site and sent it off to their repair facility in New Jersey. They provide work estimates before they start, so I figured that if it was going to be a cheap fix I'd get it done. If it was going to be expensive, I'd start looking into a new camera.

It turns out that even though the camera was out of its original warranty, the CCD replacement was still covered. So today, just over a week after I sent it to them, I have a fully functional camera back on my desk and all I had to pay for was the original shipping to the repair center.

So thanks, Fuji! By standing behind your product, keeping me informed throughout the process, and making sure that the repair was done quickly and accurately, you've shown me great service and have ensured a loyal customer for many more years.

Misfile '08

It's become a tradition of sorts to have a new Misfile car finished at the beginning of November. First it was Ash's XR4Ti, then last year it was Tom's RSX-S. Continuing to move through the strip in order of first appearances, this year it's Emily's Nissan 240SX.
