What Evil Drives...

This has been one of the most difficult projects I've ever had to explain to people. Conversations usually went something like this:

"What are you building now?"
"The Car"
"Well, yeah - but what's it from?"
"The Car"
"What?"
"The Car. It's the car used in the movie The Car."

It sounded like the old Who's on First? routine, but it wasn't a joke. I must've had this conversation at least half a dozen times over the last couple of months with both friends and fellow modelers. Apparently the old James Brolin movie isn't well-known enough for most people to remember. Then again, it could just be marketing - nobody forgets Christine, so maybe The Car Just needed a better name.

Although it got a bad name, at least Planet X made sure the kit was pretty good. You can see the finished model here.

Photos from Speed Rally at Historicon 2009

A couple of months ago I was contacted by a fellow customizer who was building a 1/64 Deathmobile to be used in a (then upcoming) car game. I was able to send a couple of files his way, and we've traded e-mails back and forth since then.

Speed Rally

The car game, Speed Rally premiered last weekend at Historicon 2009. Seen above is the starting grid for the Wacky Race Championship, with the Deathmobile still in its "undercover" mode. Below is a shot of the cakeless version, in the midst of a pileup. Unfortunately it sustained massive damage after missing a jump and was out of the race for the day. You can see more photos from the event and learn more about the game here.

Seeing SDCC Vicariously Through Cool Toy Review

This is one of the few times where I'll break scale on this site. Mattel's booth is showing off some great vehicles coming out in the near future, including the Batmissile, the Batman Forever car, and a few bikes:

Go Team Serendipity

If you've visited this weblog in the last few days, you may have noticed an occasional MySQL error pop up. Long story short, an uptick in traffic was hitting it harder than it could handle, and I finally needed to install the long-overdue upgrade. The guys who created Serendipity swore up and down on their site that updating was ridiculously easy, and that I had no excuse for not doing so. Turns out they were correct, and today I replaced the old version with Serendipity 1.4.1. All of my testing so far has been error-free, and aside from a few remaining stylesheet tweaks you should notice no real difference aside from more uptime. Thanks to the guys who put this weblog system together for making the upgrade so easy. I promise not to wait so long next time.

Real Fake Models

This is an awesome video that uses effects to make a 1:1 monster truck event look like it was made using scale models:

Happy Birthday, Vin!

The Pacifier and Riddick movies aside, Vin Diesel is the modern Hollywood Wheel Man. I had just wrapped up a build of one of the few imports he has driven in his movies, the RX-7 used near the beginning of The Fast and the Furious, when I discovered that today happened to be his birthday. Maybe I ought to do an annual Vin Diesel Day to go with my Burt Reynolds day?

Although it is a pretty simplistic kit, it looks pretty decent with a little extra detail work

Facebook 'em, Danno

It took me long enough, but I finally signed up on Facebook. My profile is located here.

Battle over 'Batman' figurines now a federal case

From Tampa Bay Online:

DC Comics has its tights in a twist over a Bradenton man's Caped Crusader figurines.

The creator of Batman and legions of other superheroes has gone to court, asking a federal judge to make John Stacks stop selling unauthorized resin figures of Batman, Robin and Batgirl, and arch-villains the Joker, Catwoman, the Riddler and King Tut.

The comic company says it repeatedly warned Stacks, but he has continued to violate Batman's trademark and copyright by selling the figures on his Web site, johnnysresin.com.

Independence Day 2009

I was always partial to "Hunter"...

It took nearly two years, used parts from at least ten different kits*, and required most of a tube of body filler, but at long last the Winchester Impala from Supernatural has joined my collection!

- 2x AMT 1967 Chevrolet Impala Super Sports (kit #08207): primary build, rear door panels
- 1x AMT 1968 Chevy Camaro Z/28 (kit #38428): roof pillars
