Press Release: FAO Schwarz Celebrates 150th Anniversary by Presenting Gallery of Historic Toys

Since 1862, one brand has embodied whimsical, high-quality, innovative toys. Now celebrating its 150th Anniversary, FAO Schwarz is marking this rare milestone in the world of retail by unveiling a special gallery featuring prototype, original and early editions of some of the best-known toys in the world, alongside some nostalgic items from the FAO Schwarz archives. Displayed prominently throughout the famed flagship store in New York City, "A Gallery of Historic Toys," will be on display now through April 10.

Generations of kids have found their most cherished playthings on the shelves of FAO Schwarz, and the retailer has served as the launch pad for many iconic toys and games throughout the years. Now, FAO Schwarz is showcasing more than 25 vintage versions of toys ranging from a 1905 Richard Steiff Teddy Bear and first edition Hot Wheels® Cars to Hello Kitty's first U.S. products and a 1982 hand-sewn Cabbage Patch Kid®. Toy enthusiasts can also view "A Gallery of Historic Toys" online at FAO.com and Facebook.com/FAO.

"Founder Frederick August Otto Schwarz created his beloved store 150 years ago as a theater for the industry to showcase items in a way that would engage consumers, while introducing them to new products from all over the world," said Lisa Harnisch, Senior Vice President, General Merchandising Manager, Toys"R"Us, U.S. "From the original baby carriage to Steiff teddy bears to the first-ever Nintendo Entertainment System, FAO Schwarz has brought thousands of unforgettable toys to market, evolving from a purveyor of extraordinary products to a must-see retail destination."

It Had to be Hunter Green

I actually would have been finished with this model weeks ago, if not for a glaring oversight on my part. I purchased a new rear bumper from Modelhaus after this kit's original rear bumper went to the Speed Demon Chevelle, but toatlly forgot to get the taillights to go with it. So this model sat, 95% finished, for several weeks for the parts to be created and shipped. As always, the wait was well worth it (Modelhaus remains the gold standard for resin casting), and I now have one more car in my Supernatural collection.

Toy Fair 2012 Spotlight: MEGA Brands

With the dust from Toy Fair 2012 settling and everyone getting back home and into their usual routine, I wanted to take a minute to talk about one of the companies I got to meet with: MEGA Brands, makers of the Mega Bloks construction toys. I was happy to have the opportunity to talk with them, as their philosophy of offering construction toys to all age groups echoed my own sentiments on this site.

Mega Bloks were first introduced by their parent company, Ritvik holdings, in 1984. Their focus on younger builders helped the brand catch on quickly, to the point where Ritvik sold off its other toy lines to focus solely on Mega Bloks in 1989. The last few years have seen several cool new lines, including Need for Speed, Halo, Thomas & Friends, Cars, and more. Their booth at Toy Fair showcased several continuing and new lines for 2012.
Tiny n Tuff Buildables
For the youngest builders (age 1 - 4), the "Tiny 'n Tuff" series is set to premiere this spring. Each compact vehicle is a three-piece set with colorful paint, happy faces, and interchangeable pieces allow for mixing and matching with other Tiny 'n Tuff Buildables (as well as all other Mega Bloks First Builders). The line will continue to grow, with the Tiny 'n Tuff Ramp and Race 'n Chase Rig scheduled for release in the fall.
Blok Squad
For slightly older builders (5+), the Blok Squad will feature new sets including the Ocean Adventure (pictured) and Hero Packs. The Police Station and Fire Patrol Station are already available in stores.
Need for Speed Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 and Custom Rig
They will also be introducing new and expanding on existing properties such as Chuggington, Hello Kitty, Need for Speed, Dora the Explorer, and Smurfs. All of these lines feature a combination of specialty and traditional building blocks, allowing them to create accurate toys while still remaining easy to build, customize, and rebuild. The Need for Speed cars are especially cool, with surprisingly accurate reproductions of cars like the Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Lamborghini Reventon. The full series of 1/38 and 1/55 scale vehicles should be available by the end of the year (sadly, nothing in 1/24).
Halo Universe
One of last year's biggest winners for MEGA was their line of Halo sets. They will be expanding on this series as well, with several new sets in the traditional size as well as an all-new series featuring smaller vehicles with metal figures. The smaller scale will allow for larger in-scale vehicles and playsets, and in fact appear to be very close to wargaming scale for anyone who might want to add a Warthog, Scorpion, or Falcon to their armies.
World of Warcraft
MEGA also had previews of a couple of their upcoming properties. The first - and by far largest - was the World of Warcraft series that will join Halo as one of the heavy hitters for 2012. The WoW sets will include figures, vehicles, and scenes from the game, my personal favorites being the airships they had on display. The second big license of 2012 is the Spider-Man movie sets that will debut with this summer's movie.
3D Puzzles
While the Mega Bloks line was by far the largest part of MEGA's booth, they did have a few other fun items. The first was a series of 3D puzzles called "Breakthroughs." The outer edge of the puzzle is a common rectangle (so it can fit in a standard frame once it's assembled), but certain elements of the puzzle actually rise from the background, creating a 3-dimensional object once the puzzle is finished. It falls somewhere between traditional puzzles and paper modeling, and the effect is quite cool in person.

These items were just a small sampling of what was going on at the MEGA booth - detailing everything would require an entire week's worth of entries. Suffice it to say, MEGA has really stepped up their game this year, and has a lot of promising new products on the horizon. Boys and girls of all ages will be sure to find something fun to build, and that includes adults. After all, when was the last time you built something? Stop by the toy aisle on your lunch break, grab an inexpensive building set, and put it together before you go back to work.

Toy Fair 2012 Day 3: Toys for All Ages

In addition to my usual stops, I took the opportunity this year to visit some new brands (including a couple of upcoming spotlight features).
Green Toys Race Car
First up, for the youngest gear heads is a line of cars from Green Toys. Green Toys' isn't just a sound bite name, either: their products are made from 100% recycled milk jugs obtained, processed, and assembled in California. But what's really cool are the toys themselves. The "Race Car" (above) is their standard sized vehicle, and they also have larger (Dump Truck, Fire Truck, Flat Bed, Recycling Truck, and School Bus) and smaller sizes (Taxi, Fastback, Police Car, and Ambulance). All of them have a fun look reminiscent of the old Nylint plastic cars, but the darker colors and matte finishes make them seem a little more refined.
OWI Salt Water Fuel Cell Car
For older kids and science fans, OWI had their Salt Water Fuel Cell Car on display. The car has a small chamber in the rear that holds the fuel, and just a small amount was needed to send the car racing around the track for over 10 minutes. I was impressed by how fast it moved: the high walls around the track weren't just for show, they were necessary to keep it from flying off the table.
Guillow's Aeronca Champion kit
And finally, for older kids and adults, Guillow's was there showing off their laser-cut balsa wood aircraft kits. Guillow model airplane company is a family business that started out as Nu Craft Toys in 1926, and today boasts a wide range of airplane kits in a number of scales. I have been considering adding 1/24 aircraft to my builds for a while now, but wanted to take a look at them in person first. Having seen them here, I am now sold on the idea and will definitely be trying them out in the future. I highly recommend checking out their web site, which includes a forum where you can share your builds and get answers to any questions you may have about aircraft building.

Toy Fair 2012 Day 2: Old Familiar Faces

As usual, I like to visit certain companies every year - companies who I feel offer some great products for kids and adults alike.
Dano2, makers of Ducki and other high-quality infant & toddler toys, has made the leap into the digital world with their AppCrayon stylus and Little Sky Writers app. The app is a fun way for kids to learn their letters, and is surprisingly easy to get caught up with. Schools have responded very well to it, and it looks like Dano2 has a real winner on its hands.
M2 Machines 1971 Dodge Challenger
M2 Machines continues their line of outstanding 1/24 scale muscle cars with the 1971 Dodge Challenger, a rare item in 1/24 scale. The May Cheong group also had a few nice surprises, the biggest of which was a return of the 1/24 Muscle Machines. they had a few examples of their upcoming cars, and those who have been collecting for a few years should remember these. In their Maisto line, they announced a 2013 Viper, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, and a Ford Mustang Boss 302 with a paint job reminiscent of the Mistmobile from Kick Ass (perhaps another "stealth" Hollywood car, like their Highway Patrol Buick?). Bburago will be releasing a new Jaguar XKR-S, a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, a VW Polo GTI Mark 5, a VW Scirocco R, a Lotus Evora S IPS, a Lexus IS 350, a Volvo C70 (both coupe and cabriolet), a Peugeot 207, a Fiat 500 taxi, an Audi RS4, and a new series of tuners.
Last but not least, Carrera had an excellent response to their 1/24 slot cars in 2011, and so will be expanding their line with several vintage racers in 2012. Among these will be the Audi R8 LMS, Ferrari 250 GT "Breadvan," Porsche GT3 RSR, Ferrari 599XX, GT-40, and most excitingly, Porsche 917K. Carrera's slot cars are truly remarkable, and I'll be taking a closer look at them in the near future - be sure to check here for detailed reviews over the next few months.

Toy Fair 2012 Day 1: Transformers

Transformers was a somewhat mixed bag this year. On the plus side, we can look forward to a ton of new figures from the Prime, Fall of Cybertron, and Generations lines. On the down side, many of the highly anticipated figures that fans have been looking forward to have been canceled or put on hiatus. The biggest loss is the remaining Dark of the Moon figures, including one that I was particularly looking forward to: Human Alliance Soundwave:
Human Alliance Soundwave
It's possible that we may see a limited release later on, as we did with Mudflap, but no guarantees at this point.

In happier news for large-scale TF collectors, Hasbro did unveil their Transformers: Prime Weaponizers Optimus Prime & Bumblebee figures:
Weaponizers Optimus Prime
Weaponizers Bumblebee
The "Weaponizers" figures are approximately "Leader" sized, so they may fit pretty well with your Human Alliance/Alternator/etc. figures. TFormers.com has a video demonstration of the Bumblebee figure in action.

Small Time

Short Time has, as of this writing, never seen a DVD release in the United States. This is especially unfortunate when you consider that it has one of the greatest chase sequences of all time (some people even consider it to be the all-time greatest). With that kind of heritage, it was only a matter of time before I added a representative of the movie to my collection.

Slixx Decals

Posted on Slixx.com

Dear Valued Customers,

We would like take just a brief moment to thank you all for your support over the past 19 years. Many of you have become a big part of our Slixx family. We have come to the hard decision to stop production of Slixx Decals. We will be finishing up a few grill sheets and 1/16th scale drag goody sheets that are currently in production, but those will be the last Slixx Decals produced. We will be selling off our existing inventory until they are gone. Again, thank you so much for the support over the years. We wish you all the best in the future.

Sincerely,
Gene & Becky Sisemore
