Gil Grissom’s Office For Sale on eBay

Exactly one year ago tomorrow, the Miniature Killer first appeared on CSI. Now you can purchase the prop of Grissom's office used in the most recent MK episode "Living Doll." The model has been estimated to be worth $25,000, and all proceeds will go to benefit CASA.

You can watch the progress and make your own bids here.

"For Sale" stuff moved to eBay

The time has come to raise funds sooner rather than later, so I've moved a bunch of the items from the "For Sale" page to eBay for the next few days. If you've been considering any of these items, now is your best chance: you can check out everything for sale here.

Wooden Harley Model

From The Sun (UK):

Model maker Colin Webb looks ready to varnish into the distance — on a full-size Harley-Davidson made of PLYWOOD.

The green machine — with moving parts — took Colin 900 hours to make from old pieces of board.

He got the idea working at a recycling plant where plywood was dumped in landfill.

The 100kg bike is made of 82 sq ft of wood, five litres of glue and four litres of varnish.

Colin, 40, of Taunton, Somerset, said: “There were no plans. It’s all done in my head with maths.”

1/64 Batcave

A few weeks ago, this cool little Batcave popped up on eBay. Complete with computers, Bat-poles, and the Atomic Pile, it is designed to fit in a 1/18 display case to show off the Hot Wheels Batmobile.

The creator of the cave, Renato, has now set up a direct-purchase web site for it. So if you're interested in adding one to your collection, you can get it here.

Transformers at IMAX

I reviewed Transformers when it first came out in July, so I'll make this review of the IMAX upgrade short:

- The extra footage neither helps nor hinders the movie, but did add a couple more laughs.
- Between the fight scenes and Peter Cullen's delivery, the IMAX sound system got a good workout.
- Lifesize giant robots.

Yes, Transformers at IMAX was definitely a worthwhile purchase. The movie is just so big that it deserves the mega-screen treatment, and the extra care taken to prep it for these theaters looks & sounds even more amazing than the regular screen version. If you've been waiting to see it, now is the perfect opportunity. If you've already seen it, go again. This is the type of movie IMAX theaters were built for. Not sure if you have one nearby? You can check it out here.

Corvette Funfest This Weekend in Effingham, IL

"Now in its fourteenth year, Corvette Funfest is a free customer appreciation event hosted by Mid America Motorworks. Last year’s event drew over 14,000 Corvettes and 45,000 enthusiasts to Mid America Motorworks’ sprawling corporate campus. With featured guests including George Barris, the ‘King of the Kustomizers’, and popular rock band Three Dog Night, record crowds are expected for 2007.

"The theme of this year’s event will be ‘Celebrating a Corvette Summer,’ (seen above)with the customized 1973 Stingray from the movie of the same name serving as the featured vehicle. The ’73 'Corvette Summer' Stingray, driven by Mark Hamill in the 1978 movie, is one of many Corvettes in the personal collection of Mid America Motorworks founder Mike Yager. Yager’s extensive collection, which also features the priceless CERV-1 (Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle) and a 1964 World’s Fair Mitchell Styling Corvette, will be on display throughout Funfest."

As if the event wasn't cool enough, Mid America Motorworks put together a set of Flash movies like the one above, each one showcasing one of the star cars that will be there. This is a great tool for anyone who might be interested in building a model of one of these unique Corvettes. Thanks, MAM!

Stuff For Sale Update

As I noted in my previous entry, I've been doing a bit of cleaning in the hobby room and came across a couple of unbuilt kits that I picked up several years ago. Since I don't know when (if) I'll get around to building them, I decided to add them to the Models for Sale page.

For those who have asked: yes, these kits are all being sold at original value. I bought all of these at retail at one point or another, and am now selling the kits that I am least likely to build in the forseeable future. Not the junk ones, or parts kits; these are pretty much exactly how I bought them.

Took Me Long Enough...

I was going through some boxes, cleaning up a bit when I came across a long-forgotten custom that I had started...eight years ago. Yes, I bought the Star Wars Tatooine Accessory playset for its Scrubber Droid back when they were first in stores and didn't finish it until today (come to think of it, I believe I bought it at Ames: the store itself has been out of business for over five years now).

Every once in a while, I wonder if I should thin down my collection and move out some of the Star Wars droids that I've collected or built over the years. Then something like this comes along, and reminds me of why they were so much fun to do. You can check out the latest droid to join the ranks here.

Where are the flying cars? I was promised flying cars! I don't see any flying cars! Why?

Paleo-Future is a fun site that takes a look at the future we never got - flying cars, robot helpers, moving sidewalks - as portrayed over the last 120 years. As in the picture above, there were a lot of predictions for our daily drivers that never materialized, but would make some great custom subjects for modelers out there. You can check out this and other futuristic inventions here.

The 50 Worst Cars of All Time

Time.com is currently running a special feature by LA Times columnist Dan Neil, "The 50 Worst Cars of All time." The list includes some obvious and some surprising entries, but still makes for an interesting look back at some of Automotive History's more unique ideas. You can check it out here.

Today's Misfile

Today's Misfile was a good one, if for no other reason than familiarity. Though looking at the toy compared to the hand holding it, it's a lot smaller than my version. Maybe this one from Matchbox:

(Yes, I've had a Sierra in my collection since the mid-eighties)

It also made me realize that it's been nearly a year since I built Ash's Merkur...I have to get busy working on the next Misfile car!

Press Release: Transformers is Coming to DVD October 16

HOLLYWOOD, Calif--The armies of CYBERTRON invaded theaters with a juggernaut fury that shook the summer of 2007, but on October 16, 2007 fans of all ages will discover that there is far “More Than Meets The Eye” to the massive mechanical behemoths when TRANSFORMERS arrives on Earth in spectacular DVD and HD DVD two-disc Special Edition sets as well as on a single disc from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures; distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Earning over $650 million at the global box office to date, the massive production exploded onto screens from the creative minds of director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, taking audiences by storm and becoming the biggest original film of the year. The first live-action film based on the enduringly popular “robots in disguise”, TRANSFORMERS features the ultimate battle between good and evil, as the peace-loving AUTOBOTS seek to protect humanity from the evil forces of the DECEPTICONS. The action-packed film stars a hot young cast of up-and-coming actors including Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia), Josh Duhamel (“Las Vegas”, Tyrese Gibson (Four Brothers) and Megan Fox (“Hope & Faith”, as well as seasoned performers such as Jon Voight (National Treasure) and John Turturro (The Good Shepherd). But the biggest stars are the TRANSFORMERS robots themselves – including fan favorites OPTIMUS PRIME, MEGATRON, BUMBLEBEE, RATCHET, JAZZ and more – brought to life by revolutionary new VFX techniques developed by the innovative digital wizards at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).

Plus, a GPS Locator that can access a map and GPS coordinates. Paramount’s TRANSFORMERS HD DVD connectivity capabilities will reveal additional HD DVD exclusive features at street date and at various time periods in the future.

The HD DVD also includes a TRANSFORMERS H.U.D.
