Happy New Year!

2007 Year in Review

2007 has been a busy year in the hobby: we started the year with some sad news, including the passing of modeler Ricky Couch and the news that RC2 was going to be discontinuing the AMT line. We then got some better news over the next few months, including the release of the first series of Reel Rides cars and the biggest license coup in years: Mattel's 1/64 and 1/18 1966 Batmobiles. We got a glimpse into the future of the hobby with several articles about 3D printing processes, and had some concerns about the near-future of the hobby with the acquisition of Revell by Hobbico.

There were also some interesting 1:1 hobby notes, including the auctions for John Schneider's General Lee and KITT, the unearthing of the Tulsa Plymouth, the 21-foot X-Wing takeoff and "landing," and the launch of Star Car Central.

TV- and movie-wise, we saw the premier and cancellation of Fox's Drive, some preview images of KITT and the Mach 5 for their upcoming projects next year, and special edition diecast cars with the purchase of Blade Runner Ultimate Collector Edition DVD (Spinner) and Cars Blu-Ray (Blu-Ray McQueen). We also got the release of two long-awaited big screen properties this summer with Transformers and The Simpson's Movie, both sure to inspire some model projects in the future.

Speaking of projects, the models added to the site this year included Metallo, the Chicken Pit Special, the Flintmobile, Batman's first car, the CSI: Miami Hummer, the Jericho Roadrunner, Rollover, the Deathmobile, the Birds of Prey Hummer, a Scrubber Droid, TC-14, the B'Omarr Monk, Bumblebee, the Misfile Acura, the 2007 Holiday Auction, the Monster Garage Wedding on Wheels, and an update to my 1966 Batmobile.

This year also saw the launch of video tips & tutorials on the site, an idea I'm hoping to expand on. And even though there's only one day left this year, the updates aren't done yet - check back tomorrow for the final update of the year!

Merry Christmas

Blade Runner Spinner in New DVD Set

The Blade Runner DVD set that was just released this week comes with what appears to be a 1/35 scale Spinner replica. CessnaDriver posted some photos of the Spinner on the Hollywood Diecast forum, and notes that it has opening doors and is posed in flight mode only.

You can pick up the Blade Runner Ultimate Collectors Edition at Amazon.com by clicking here.

Last Guest Gallery Update of the Year

Modeler Bob sent in two new models, a '68 Dodge Charger and the famous yellow & black Badman II. You can see the photos here.

It's a Nice Day for a Whitewall Wedding

Truth be told, I wasn't really a huge fan of Monster Garage. The projects were generally pretty cool, but the attitudes and "soap opera" moments were often a bit much. Fortunately, there were some truly excellent episodes like "Old School Chevy" and "Army Tractor Pull" that showed what could be done with a great team.

I'd bought the set of three 1/24 MG kits back when they came out, and kept them for a day when I either felt like doing some scratchbuilding/detailing, or I felt like a quick slam-together. The latter came first, as I wanted to take a break from body work, filler, and paint after finishing the recent holiday auction cars. The result of this one-day buildup, the Chevy Suburban Wedding Chapel, is available here.

Model Kits for Christmas

In the wake of all the recalls this year, many parents are having trouble deciding what to get the kids this Christmas. Why not get (or recommend to others in your family) a building toy? Safe toys are available for kids of all ages—Duplo sets for 18 months - 5 year olds, LEGO sets for 4 - 16 year olds, and Plastic Kits for 10 and up—and they teach patience and instruction-following, help kids with their dexterity, and still allow for plenty of creativity.

You still have time to order online, or visit a nearby HobbyTown USA if you'd prefer a more "hands-on" approach to shopping.

Hot Rod Magazine Counts Down the Top 100 Rods

The current (January '08) issue of Hot Rod magazine features a countdown of the 100 most influential hot rods of all time. Many of the cars don't seem to fit the traditional "hot rod" theme, which was actually nice to see - it shows that they were serious about picking the most "influential" cars, for better or for worse.

If you get a chance, grab a copy before they're off the stands - it's a good read and a practical "Who's Who" of the car world: Dean Jeffries, Ed Roth, George & Sam Barris, Richard Petty, Kenny Bernstein, Gene Winfield, and Bob Hirohata are just a few of the names featured.

Final Day of the 2007 Holiday Auction

Just a reminder that today is the last day of the 2007 Holiday Auction. If you plan to bid, now is the time to do it! You can view the auction here.

Future Knight Rider Thoughts

The response from last week's news about KITT has been mixed. Some people think the GT500KR is a great choice, others think that the producers should've picked a better car, and still others wish that Knight Rider had stayed in the 1980s altogether.

Personally, I'm going to wait until I see it in action before I make a final judgement. But if they are planning on doing a restart or continuation of the series using the classic "William Daniels" version of KITT, I do wonder if the Mustang was the most appropriate choice. The old KITT was very refined - some would say snobbish - and it fit with the sleek lines of the old Firebird. Although a lot of its mystique has been lost over the last quarter century, the Firebird was a pretty stylish car for the time...before then, the tapered nose and pop-up headlights were design features normally associated with Corvettes and high-end European imports.

In the the movie Knight Rider 2000, KITT was less than enthusiastic about being placed in a classic car, and far preferred the Banshee-inspired sports car. I have a feeling that the KITT of old would've had a similar reaction to the GT500KR - an awesome machine, but more of a sledgehammer than a rapier. I think something a little sleeker might've been more appropriate, and it would've been cool to see KITT go back to his GM roots:
