Guest Gallery Update

Another new modeler has joined the Guest Gallery! Welcomer to modeler Ricky, who has sent in a couple of works in progress, plus a sight that should be familiar to fans of the Burt Reynolds flick White Lightning. You can check out his models here.

Congratulations to Jay Ohrberg

And thanks to Joe at Hollywood-Diecast.com for posting this news, as I would've missed it otherwise!

On Saturday, January 26, Jay Ohrberg was inducted into the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame. As a builder for the entertainment industry, his work has included designing and building the vehicles for Batman Returns, as well as building cars for Knight Rider, Back to the Future, RoboCop, and The Flintstones. You can read more about him and see photos of his collection on his site.

Happy Birthday LEGO Brick!

Although the LEGO group had been around for several years by 1958, that was the year that a revolutionary new brick design (the stud-and-tube coupling system) created what we now know as the LEGO brick. Today marks the 50th anniversary of that event, and to mark the occasion LEGO is selling an exclusive update of their original "Town Plan" set:

It features some cool elements like a 1950s-style gas station, a town hall with a newly-married couple, a movie theater with ticket booth, seats and posters, 2 classic cars, and 8 minifigs. The company owner, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, makes a return appearance on the box art (he appeared as a kid on the original Town Plan box). He is shown next to his father Godtfred Kirk below in a photo from the 1955 demonstration of the original "Town Plan" set.

As anyone who's looked around knows, I've been a LEGO builder for quite a while. Near as I can remember, it all traces back to this little set that I got nearly a quarter century ago:

Coincidentally, that was the same year I got hooked on Transformers...apparently 1984 was a banner year!

Guest Gallery Update

A new modeler has joined the Guest Gallery! "Rustbucket" has sent in some pics of his work, including a pair of 1/8 '32 Fords, a highly customized Army lowboy/dozer, a yard crane, and a couple of hot rods. You can check out his work here.

New Item for Sale: Thin Whitewalls

Thanks to Reproalabels, there's a new item available for sale: thin whitewall applications.

Unlike decals or paper stickers, these are tough but thin vinyl applications that stick solidly to the tire sidewall and can be repositioned as needed for a perfect fit. These are what I used on my Bullitt Charger. You can purchase them here.

Jada News

1stopdiecast.com posted this photo on the HobbyTalk boards, of Jada's upcoming Camaro set:

Looks like Jada is trying to edge their way into the 1/64 Transformers market. Now, if only they'd repeat that in 1/24...

Speaking of which, here's a shot of their upcoming 1/24 Mach V:

Guest Gallery Update

Modeler Bob has sent in some pics of his latest project, a shaved & decked '54 Chevy Lowrider. You can view the photos here.

Looking Back: eBay

Continuing the "nostalgia" theme, I'll take the opportunity this evening to reflect on another site that has had a major impact on me as a builder and collector: eBay.

I joined eBay eight years ago today, at the recommendation of a Hess toy truck collector. My first purchase was a back issue of Entertainment Weekly, but my first model purchase followed soon after: it was a 1/28 Ligier JS-11 from Blue Tank that would go on to become Mirage. Since then I've been a regular user, averaging about one transaction per week, and eBay has helped my hobbies immeasurably: the Vanette kits used for Ratchet and Ironhide, the Pantera for my 1987 Batmobile, or the Tomorrow Never Dies BMW would've been impossible to find otherwise (not to mention quite a few Transformers and other old toys).

Later that first year was also the debut of my annual Holiday Auction. My selling has pretty much been limited to those and the occasional diorama detail set, though I've put up the occasional model kit, toy, or other miscellaneous item now & then.

Overall, I've been very happy with my dealings on eBay. Sure, there have been a handful of bad users - and it has in no way replaced some of my other hobby outlets - but the benefit of getting those rare & out-of-production items has been worth it. I just make sure to keep it fun, avoid the snipers whenever possible, and look forward to many more years of buying & selling.

Guest Gallery Update & New Tip of the Month

The new Tip of the Month is up, and it's another video file. This time, I've also included a higher-quality Quicktime movie if you'd like to download it and save it to your computer.

There's also an update to the Guest Gallery: DREDDBATFAN has sent in some pictures of his finished resin Batboat. You can see the pics here.

The Top Ten Best Car Chases

Although car chase movie lists have been done several times, I always felt there were one or two movies that always got overlooked, and a couple that were always included because of nostalgia more than anything else. So, I decided to make my own.

Celebrating Ten Years in 2008!

It's true: version 1.0 of this site went live on Friday, 8 May 1998 at "http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shire/4218". It was before Google existed, before Windows 98 was released, and the "Y2K Bug" was going to be the next major crisis.

My knowledge of HTML was rather slim at the time, and I lacked a digital camera or scanner, so the single-page "site" had to make due with text, several pictures I found online, and some digital drawings that I had done. The latter included a crude blueprint of my diorama that I had created in MS Paint:

The site quickly grew, and by the end of that year I had a (very) rough approximation of what the site is today. I went through several styles and upgrades over the years since then: the overall focus of the site has become better, PHP replaced HTML for ease of updating, this Weblog replaced the old Guestbook, and so on.

I've got a few things planned to add to the site in celebration of the anniversary, including a look back at various milestones for the site and for the web in general...so be sure to check back often to see what's new!
