Party Like it's 1999

That's a wrap for 2022! As someone who remembers when the concept of "party like it's 1999" seemed so far off in the future, it seems fitting to be finishing and posting my tribute to Prince on the eve of a new year.

I Have Confidence

Or, at least I'm good at faking it. Getting down to the last couple of days, and trying to eke out one or two more builds that are very nearly done. The penultimate one just wrapped, Captain Von Trapp's Mercedes from The Sound of Music.

You Can't Stop the Beat

Once I finished the Grease Ford, it seemed like a given to make something from Hairspray. But the best option was the red 1961 Corvette, of which there were precisely zero kits currently available. I did have all the parts to make my own, though, so after several months of cutting, filling, sanding, and pulling parts I was able to get it finished with nearly a week to spare!

You Said Forever, Now I Drive Alone Past Your Street

Curiously enough, it was a Jalopnik article I read last year that prompted me to go with "Music" as my 2022 build theme. They were discussing the new single by Olivia Rodrigo, and how it fit in with the larger picture of songs about cars. It started me thinking about how many ideas could come from that intersection, and writing down some ideas. Before i knew it, I had more than I could possibly tackle ina year.

Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii

Most times when "Top TV Theme Song" lists get compiled, they leave out one of my all-time favorites: Mike Post and Pete Carpenter's intro to Magnum, P.I., featuring Larry Carlton on guitar. It was a near-perfect fusion of 80s action with surf rock, plus a bridge that has a laid-back vibe ideally suited to Thomas Magnum. Without a single lyric, you get that the show will be an adventure in Hawaii with a cool character.

I'm Fine Living Without You

Remember the story about how Chic's 1978 song "Le Freak" wasn't supposed to use the phrase "freak out," but as the original lyrics used a radio-unfriendly expletive they changed it - first to "freak off" before settling on the version we know today? Turns out that, according to producer Teddy Park, "Hate You" was also supposed to have a much more forceful title before being modified to a "clean" version to allow for greater airplay.

Lookin' Sharp, Lookin' for Love

Quite possibly the most famous ride in music video history, I really couldn't do a music-themed year without including ZZ Top's Eliminator.
