Background

Addictive Desert Designs started in 2007 as a small custom and fabrication shop in a garage just outside of Phoenix, AZ. In the decade and a half since then, they've grown to a 10,000 square foot production facility and corporate office devoted to creating rugged, unique equipment for trucks, SUVs, and Jeeps. As part of Jada's second set of Pink Slips vehicles, they've created a Ford Raptor featuring several ADD items and a custom paint job.

Packaging

The Raptor uses the second Pink Slips box design, with the plastic tray built into the base of the box. The only changes are the vehicle title on the front of the box and, curiously, the Chevelle co-sell on the back is properly identified as such (the others being this, the Challenger, and the Aventador).

Casting/Paint

An excellent casting, with clean panels and some of the sharpest breaks I've seen. The cab and box are diecast, with rigid black plastic used for the bumpers, grille, mirrors, bed liner, and chase rack. The headlights and windows are clear, the mirror inserts are chrome, and the taillights are transparent red plastic. Everything fits together flawlessly, even in tough areas like the multifaceted headlights and where the bulged fenders met the doors. Just great work across the board.

The paint is just as good, with a base color that's somewhere between gunmetal and black. In the past I've talked about Jada having difficulty with clear colors, but it looks like they've leveraged a liability into an asset: there's a subtle shift in the base color that your eye can't quite pin down. The base color is accented by gold pinstripes and lettering. Their placement leaves no room for error, and Jada was up to the task with absolutely perfect registration for all the graphics. These include ADD logos on the hood and front doors; Method, B&M, and Borla logos on both sides; and Raptor logos on the flanks above the rear wheels. Flat black paint is used for the hood vent, cowl, fender flares, and tailgate panel. Finally, the LED strip across the front bumper is silver and the clearance lights n the grille are picked out in orange.

The excellent work continues inside, with a fully detailed interior right down to the dash vents and seat controls. It's solid black, with a sticker providing the gauge cluster detail. Under the hood is a two-piece assembly representing the 5.0L Coyote V8. It's got all the critical components to make it recognizable, but despite the separate intake manifold it still looks a bit flat. Similarly, the chassis is basic but does include and engine guard, frame rails, transmission pan, trailing arms for the rear axle, and dual exhausts terminating in chrome tailpipes. The tires are still the large hollow-back style that I don't care for, but they're nicely tucked up inside the body so the effect is minimal. Wheels are gold 12-spoke beadlocks mounted over the usual disc brakes.

Features/Accessories

The doors, hood, and tailgate all open and close on nice smooth hinges. The tailgate locks into place very tightly, so take care when popping it open.

Accuracy

This doesn't seem to be based on any one specific truck, though it does model the actual Stealth Fighter front bumper, HoneyBadger side steps, and Race Series chase rack available from Addictive Desert Designs. The wheels appear to be Method Race Wheels' MR101s, again not used on a specific Raptor but Method and ADD accessories have appeared on other vehicles together. The only real accuracy blip I see is the V8, as G2 Raptors were only available with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 turbo. Scaling is a hair small at 1/25.5, but that makes it almost perfectly to scale with their first generation Raptor.

Overall

I was not expecting to like this one as much as I did. Jada absolutely smashed it, from the casting to the deco. The base truck looks great, the ADD accessories look great, and it all adds up to being one of their best yet.
